Dr. Alberto Hernández-Mínguez received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Barcelona in 2009 and subsequently moved to the Paul-Drude-Institut für Festkörperelektronik in Berlin, Germany, where he has been a senior scientist since 2016. His main research interest is the coupling of acoustic vibrations with the spin degree of freedom in low-dimensional quantum systems in solids, such as GaAs-based nanostructures, color centers, and ferromagnetic thin films.
Color centers in solids are promising for applications in quantum technologies because they typically exhibit spin states with long coherence times that can be easily controlled by optical, microwave and acoustic fields. In this talk, I will report on acoustically driven spin transitions between the spin sublevels of silicon vacancy centers in SiC. The use of dynamic strain instead of microwave fields allows the selective excitation of spin transitions with magnetic quantum number differences of ±1 and ±2 in both ground and excited states even at room temperature [1-3]. Compared to the ground state, the spin sublevels in the optically accessible excited state exhibit even stronger coupling with acoustic vibrations, leading to novel and largely unexplored physical phenomena. A notable example is the coherent trapping of the spin polarization resulting from the precession of the spin vector around the same axis in both the ground and excited states [2]. Our results provide new opportunities for future applications in quantum technologies based on spin optomechanics.
