José Ramón Salgueiro is professor at the University of Vigo. He got his PhD in Physics at the University of Santiago de Compostela in 2001 working on the field of integrated optics. Later on he was Assistant Professor at the University of Vigo and lead his research towards nonlinear optics working with the Optical Physics Group. In 2002 he became Postdoctoral Fellow at the Nonlinear Physics Center of the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra (Australia). In 2005 he got a Ramón y Cajal (tenure-track programme) contract at the University of Vigo, becoming Associate Professor in 2010 and full professor in 2024, where he has carried out research on the fields of photonic crystals, nonlinear optics, plasmonics, THz technology and photonic sensors.
The incorporation of metals into devices has taken integrated optics into the nanoscale but a the cost of having to deal with large power losses. Design strategies require from specific models to describe devices based on metallic layers in order to properly obtain the modes (frequency domain) and simulate light propagation (time domain). After a brief presentation of the concept, interest and some examples of plasmonic systems, as well as a discussion of the pros and cons respect to conventional devices based on dielectrics, a description of basic integrated plasmonic devices as waveguides and couplers will be reviewed paying attention to their mode spectrum. Also time domain modelling using the FDTD technique will be discussed, reviewing the suitable models to deal with metals and nonlinearities at optical frequencies. Examples of devices operating on nonlinearities will be discussed. Also, simulations of plasmonic nonlinear devices when ultra-short pulses are used will be presented.
